In this Q&A, you’ll learn more about the Bank School experience from four of the VBA Emerging Bank Leaders Steering Committee members.

What is your favorite memory from the 2025 Session of the Virginia Bankers School of Bank Management?

David: Getting to network and build relationships with various bankers from different regions of the Commonwealth.

Zach: When Kerry Sauley did a WWE skit on the very last day – by far the GREATEST! 

Jennifer: Definitely the Bank Financial Management Class, where we had members of our class volunteer to operate a bank and make decisions collaboratively. It was fun to see our classmates engage in big decisions and how everyone’s decision impacts the final outcome. We also saw personalities come out more during this roleplay scenario.

Blake: It was so much fun welcoming the first-year students to Darden and directing them to their classrooms. 

What has been your favorite class and/or faculty member?

David: My favorite class was the Economic Environment class with Dr. Ed. He is able to relate Economics to the banking industry seamlessly and presents the information in a comprehensible fashion. My Favorite instructor had to be Kerry Sauley.

Zach: My favorite class was Commercial Banking with Gary Higgins. He’s incredibly personable and speaks with such passion about the subject. It made the class both engaging and memorable. I can’t forget Dr. Ed, a man with a deep understanding of economics and the ability to make it connect with all of us.

Jennifer: I really loved them all! Performance Management is so much fun with Dr. Kerry Sauley

Blake: Jimmy Sawyers – Technology, Payments, & Cybersecurity 

What is the biggest thing that has surprised you about your time at Bank School so far?

David: How much I enjoyed all of the classes. I would not say I enjoyed taking various courses in college. However, I can say with certainty that I enjoyed all of the classes at Bank School.

Zach: The biggest surprise during my time at Bank School was the passion and charismatic attitudes the professors had toward the entire student body; it was truly inspiring.  

Jennifer: The NETWORK! I’ve met so many bankers, it’s like one big family! I intended to walk away with more knowledge, but the lifelong friendships and collaborations between banks and peer sharing are understated! 

Blake: When I first attended Bank School, the thought of doing home studies was daunting; however, working on these assignments between each year at Bank School has been super beneficial and has taught me so many things. Because of the home studies, I now have a better understanding of economic drivers and my bank’s loan portfolio. 

Why should other Emerging Bank Leaders apply to join you next summer at Bank School?

David: Because the material presented at Bank School will serve them throughout their careers. The curriculum helps you understand every facet of the banking industry. Also, the relationships you create and build at Bank School are invaluable. You get the opportunity to meet other bankers in different regions who work in different departments at their institutions. 

Zach: Other emerging bank leaders should absolutely apply to Bank School to refine their skill set and build lasting connections with peers from across the state. It’s truly an amazing program that is instrumental to both professional and personal growth.

Jennifer: Key word “EMERGING” if you’re truly emerging, then you cannot omit BANK SCHOOL! It’s a game-changer! You’re going to learn, you’re going to have fun, you’re going to meet great people! Truly priceless when I think about how this opportunity compounds in return for my career journey! The best is yet to come!

Blake: Bank School has taught me so many great things about banking that I didn’t know. Each class and instructor is top-notch and genuinely cares about each student. But one of the best parts? Making connections for life. I have made wonderful friends during my time at Bank School.
