Reimagining Peer Interactions
Communications & Connections: March 2026
In an industry built on relationships, finding the right ways to bring people together matters. That’s why the VBA, in consultation with the VBA board, made the important decision to pause committee meetings for the first half of 2026 as part of a broader strategic initiative. This reset has served as a chance to reflect, redesign, and reimagine how we support banker‑to‑banker engagement.
For years, our committees have operated under the same structure, consistently offering value, insight, and connection. However, the needs of our members continue to evolve, as we saw especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, where now holding hybrid meetings is easier, but it’s harder to get out of the office for an extended period. And our membership base has expanded, now including partners through the D.C. and Maryland Bankers Associations. This pause allows us to take a step back and ask ourselves the important questions: What purpose should committees serve today? How can we reach and include more bankers? How can we create connection points that accommodate both limited schedules and deeper involvement?
Since January, we’ve been assessing how committees function, identifying new ways to collaborate across states, and exploring formats that not only share knowledge—but strengthen relationships. We’ve been talking to other state bankers associations as well as associations across industries. As we reshape the future of these peer‑driven spaces, one thing is clear: your voice will guide the next phase.
That’s why we will soon be asking our members to take a few minutes to complete a short survey. Your feedback will help us understand which types of peer interactions bring you the most value, what formats best support your professional goals, and how we can design innovative offerings that meet today’s realities. Whether you’ve been previously involved in committee work or simply participate in VBA events and initiatives when your schedule allows, your perspective will directly influence how the association builds the next generation of peer‑to‑peer engagement.
And what better setting to share your insights than during one of our signature spring events?
This April, we’re excited to roll out Bites with Bruce, a six‑stop regional series where leaders at all levels can join Mid‑Atlantic Bankers Association and VBA President and CEO Bruce Whitehurst for conversations about the latest industry updates. These two‑hour sessions—held in Abingdon, Hampton Roads, Richmond, Roanoke, Harrisonburg, and Northern Virginia—offer exactly what my column celebrates: communications and connections. They’re an ideal opportunity to gather with colleagues, catch up with peers, and expand your regional network. And yes—they’re also a perfect moment to pull out your phone, grab a beverage or a light bite, and complete the survey while the conversations spark fresh ideas.
As we take this thoughtful pause, one thing remains constant: our commitment to helping bankers learn from one another, grow together, and stay connected. We look forward to hearing your insights, seeing you at Bites with Bruce, and building the future of engagement—together.
