For the sixth year, Virginia Bankers Association and Yount, Hyde & Barbour, P.C. are partnering to host two peer group meetings.  The purpose of these exchanges is to provide a platform to network, find answers, solutions and best practices to common issues and problems.

Meetings will begin with formal presentations on timely issues and, following the educational sessions, attendees will engage in a roundtable discussion about current issues, challenges and opportunities.

NOTE: The June 2020 peer group has been moved to a virtual format.  This peer group will provide two presentations on timely issues and an opportunity for a roundtable discussion.

Swaps for Community Banks:  Weighing the “Whys” and the “Why Nots”

Bob Newman, Managing Director
Chatham Financial

Interest rate derivatives are often labeled as “too risky” or “not worth the trouble” by main street banks.  Yet some recent changes to accounting rules along with an unexpected return to near-zero interest rates may make hedging tools worthy of a second look.  In this session, Bob Newman of Chatham Financial will attempt to demystify these products by providing a straightforward explanation of their mechanics, risks and benefits so that participants can utilize facts instead of fear when making a decision for their institution.

Regulatory Expectations: Reporting of Suspicious Activity and Testing of Automated Monitoring Tools

Matthew Henderson, CFE, CAMS, Legal Risk Unit Senior Examiner
Federal Reserve Bank Richmond

In the last few months, we have all had to adapt to a new normal, adding to the pressures faced by those tasked with BSA/AML oversight.  This includes monitoring and reporting of suspicious activity.  This presentation will discuss regulatory updates related to reporting of suspicious activity in this time of COVID 19 as well as ongoing expectations for testing of automated BSA/AML monitoring systems.
