2020 VBA Annual Convention Cancelled
In June of this year, we were planning on celebrating our 127th Annual Convention at The Breakers together with our bank members, associate members, endorsed providers and other industry partners. Great professional and family traditions have been formed during this time together every year. The only time we’ve missed having an annual convention was in 1945. Those were special circumstances and incredibly similar in some ways, albeit for a very different reason: non-essential travel restrictions connected to war rationing.
From VBA records, “June, 1945 would have been the 52nd annual meeting of the Virginia Bankers Association and it would have been held at The Homestead in Hot Springs, VA on June 14 and 15, 1945. BUT in January,1945, the Office of Defense Transportation issued an order prohibiting all conventions or meetings attended by more than fifty persons where hotel accommodations were required. There was no practical way of limiting our attendance to this number, and after waiting until April, 1945, in the hope that transportation and hotel conditions might ease sufficiently to effect a change of this order, the Executive Council regretfully announced on April 20th that our meeting could not be held.”
VBA Leadership in 1945 made a very difficult decision then, just as your current VBA Leadership, led by Chairman Jeff Haley, has made now. And, just as in 1945, we will certainly find alternate means to hold the annual meeting portion of our convention and will announce more information as we are able.
The Breakers will directly handle all room cancellations and deposit refunds. All convention registrations will be cancelled and refunded.
To our sponsors, for whom we are grateful: Amy Binns has information on additional VBA engagement opportunities. To contact her directly, please call 804-819-4707 or email her at email@example.com.
Our members strongly support our Annual Convention every year, and we could not be more thankful for you. We look forward to when we can all be together again in person, and we will send you information for future events as we are able to do so and as the VBA is able to schedule them.
