Get to Know Jennifer Gegner, 2025 EBL Committee Chair
VP, Treasury Solutions Consultant II, C&F Bank
Tell us why you became a banker and what has kept you in the industry for the past 15+ years.
While living in Wisconsin, I stumbled into my banking career and quickly realized it was a perfect fit. Banking offered me an opportunity to make a real difference by guiding individuals through their financial journeys. Whether it was helping someone purchase their first home, supporting a business owner as they built their dream, or assisting families during challenging times, I found deep fulfillment in being a trusted advisor.
When I moved to Virginia, I was fortunate to join C&F Bank, where leadership believed in me before I even fully believed in myself. Their support empowered me to step outside my comfort zone, grow both personally and professionally, and achieve goals I hadn’t imagined possible. Attending the Virginia Bankers School of Bank Management further expanded my understanding of the banking industry’s potential for growth and impact.
Financial stability is vital, and being an advocate for our customers remains a cornerstone of my passion for banking. Every banker has a voice, and together we can shape a stronger future for our communities.
Tell us how you initially became involved with the VBA Emerging Bank Leaders and why you decided to champion the group by becoming its chair.
I first became aware of the Emerging Bank Leaders (EBL) while attending Bank School. I quickly realized this group would be filled with professionals who shared my passion for career growth, leadership development, and a deep commitment to the banking industry. It was clear that this was where I belonged – regardless of title or age, we are all on a journey of growth and emergence.
Through my leadership development with C&F Bank, I had the opportunity to attend industry events such as VBA Banker Day, the VBA/ABA Washington Summit, the Leadership Conference, and Burgers with Bruce. Each experience deepened my understanding of the industry and reinforced the importance of collaboration, advocacy, and community engagement.
Knowing that our committee is dedicated to supporting one another, advocating for industry, and educating our community is what drives my passion for this role. I am truly honored to step into the position of chair for the EBL in 2025 and continue contributing to a brighter future for our industry.
What role has mentorship played in your leadership development, both as a mentee and a mentor?
Mentorship has played a crucial role in my leadership development by providing a non-judgmental space for open communication and trust. It has allowed me to speak honestly, receive constructive feedback, and offer the same in return. This dynamic has enhanced my effectiveness and helped me clarify and achieve my goals.
Anyone who has ever met you knows how much you value relationships – whether with your family, friends, colleagues or industry peers. What does relationship-focused leadership mean to you and how do you exemplify it in the workplace and in your community?
To me, relationship-focused leadership means actively listening, showing empathy, maintaining consistent communication and demonstrating a genuine commitment to others’ wellbeing. The relationships we build extend beyond professional interactions – they are founded on trust, collaboration, and connections, making every day fulfilling and rewarding.
While I continue to master these skills, I lead by example and am better equipped to cultivate long-term, meaningful relationships that inspire confidence in others.
During November’s Leadership Conference, one of the sessions inspired the group to reflect on pursuing their dreams. What were your dreams when you were growing up, and how do they compare to your aspirations today? How does your work with the EBL and the American Bankers Association Emerging Leaders Council fit in?
Growing up, I dreamed of becoming a juvenile probation officer, driven by a passion for guiding and giving hope to those who needed it most. On a lighter note, I also imagined selling mylar balloons at the Magic Kingdom, bringing smiles to children’s faces.
Today, I smile knowing I am fulfilling that same purpose, just in a different way. I continue to inspire hope, guide clients, peers, and my community, and make a positive impact through financial security.
Being part of the EBL Steering Committee through the VBA and the Emerging Leaders Council through the American Bankers Association has provided me with a platform to serve others, advocate for meaningful change, and grow alongside the best professionals in the industry.
What are some effective strategies or practices you use to achieve a healthy work-life balance, especially in a fast-paced industry? How do you prioritize your personal well-being while meeting your professional responsibilities?
Balance and boundaries are essential for both my personal and professional well-being. I often emphasize the importance of living your best life and cherishing your loved ones, knowing tomorrow is not guaranteed. This means pursuing work you are passionate about, surrounding yourself with positive people, and taking time off to enjoy meaningful experiences.
The COVID-19 pandemic gave me an opportunity to pause, reassess my priorities, and align my life with what truly brings me joy and fulfillment. I set daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly goals for both my professional and personal life. I also rely heavily on my calendar to keep track of these goals, allowing me to visually assess whether I’m staying true to my work-life balance and make adjustments as needed.
You hold an honor that very few do – you are one of the Faircloth Family Award of Excellence recipients. This award was presented by longtime Virginia Bankers School of Bank Management faculty member, Mark Faircloth, to one member of each Bank School graduating class based on the pillars of continuous learning, passionate giving and purposeful living. What did this recognition mean to you and how do you carry those pillars with you as you move forward in your banking career?
With tears in my eyes, I reflect on the moment I was honored with the Faircloth Family Award of Excellence. This recognition made me realize that I had been seen in a light I hadn’t fully recognized. I remember calling my Granny and saying, “I received an award for being ‘me’.” It gave me a deep sense of confidence, knowing that the way I live my daily life with God first, integrity guiding my actions, and authenticity in both my professional and personal self has purpose and meaning. It reminds me that our unique gifts and talents are meant to be shared.
As I move forward in my banking career, I carry these pillars close to my heart. I remain committed to continuous growth by pursuing certifications, leadership programs, and seminars. I was raised to put people first and to treat others as I wish to be treated, and that foundation has helped me build trust and lasting relationships. My greatest hope is to give back to others in the same meaningful ways they have given to me.
